My mom always was pretty handy with a needle and thread when it came to my clothes, so I just sort of picked it up from her. I started playing around with altering stuff to fit a few months ago, and have been getting better at it with practice.

Measure twice, cut once. And if you’re just taking something in or hemming something, sew it first, put it on and look at it, then cut the excess if you need to. That way you can always take out the first set of stitches and redo it if need be. There’s nothing to be afraid of! Especially if you know you won’t wear it unless you do something to it first.
