You know, say what you will about this movie, but you have to realize that 99.9% of the time, it is making fun of itself. It is incredibly self aware. However. In this way, the poignant moments are even more important if you are willing to pick them out. I could go on and on about it, but just to pick one out from these gifs has to do with the quick scene in which Jennifer is looking at herself in the mirror, getting ready for the dance. The sadness and absolute loneliness of her character is summed up pretty quickly in that one bit. You never see evidence of parents, siblings, or anyone that cares about her in what could be an altruistic or unconditional manner. The only person she has is Needy, who has, in Jennifer’s mind - I figure - has replaced her with Chip. The only person Jennifer ever cared about is slipping away, and Jennifer’s own pride won’t let her reach out, except for the scene where she says - rather shyly - “….We could play boyfriend-girlfriend like we used to…” . And when she’s told to just leave, the look of hurt on her face is immense.

As funny and stupid as this movie is from a first glance, it’s pretty fucking tragic in the subtext.
